The apple trees had a blossom on them the other day. That was unexpected for an autumn day. Brianna and I clipped the branch and made a flower arrangement in one of Marvin's ikebana bowls. We were pleased to have an apple blossom on a branch in a flower tray. It was very Zen.
We have had such fun with the associate potters this past summer. We are learning new things all the time from each other. Of course, Marvin remains the master potter who generously shares the knowledge he has gained with 35 years of production pottery experience.
The most frequently heard tips are around centering the clay. Things like this;
You don't have to muscle it, use your body and lean into it.
Straighten your wrist and don't hyperextend.
Use more water.
Set the speed a little faster.
Slow the speed after you open.
On December 8 and 9 we will be showing the work of some of the students. I am so excited. We will be setting it up and will present the work with all the flourishes of an art gallery. Marvin will also have some of the platters he made for his gallery show in Iowa. I expect to have fun this year with the Clay Guild Studio Tour.
We are also preparing for some home school classes. We have one student who comes to the studio for a private lesson and we have another larger class scheduled for next year.
One of the things I like best is teaching children. You don't have to teach them to be creative; you just have to teach them how to work with clay. We teach things like how to join the clay or how to determine the look of the finished product when you are creating the work. Sometimes the hardest part of the project is to decide what to glaze it. But that is another story.
